Discussion:
Tipping question
(too old to reply)

You call in an order for a pizza or a sandwich to go. When you pick it up
you flip our your debit card (or cash). Question is should I add a tip?
If so, I've been cheap for a long time but if I should be tipping I'll
correct my action.
Thanks,
Dick

As a former pizza delivery driver I would say yes add a tip. They usually
don't get paid that much and tipping helps them make a living....and if you
order frequently it also assures the drivers will make your delivery a
priority.

As a former Pizza Hut delivery store (plus restaurant based delivery and Red
Roof) manager who started as a dishwasher, I loved carryout business as we
didn't have to deal with it past answering the call and making the pizza.
Free $ compared to delivery or dine in business. Don't recall ever seing
anyone tip when they picked up in 13 plus years.

My bad...I misread it as it being delivery instead of pickup....and to set
the record straight...I have never tipped when I picked up food at any
restaurant...

Some newsreaders use the term Bozo Bin instead of kill file.
SPLIT PEESTATUS AND SPAM SOUP

1 ham bone
1 lb. dry split peas
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablepsoon each butter and olive oil
2 quarts water
2 bay leaves
1 lb baby carrots
1 lb spaghetti, broken into 3" pieces
salt and pepper, to taste
1 can evaporated milk or 1 cup light cream or milk

Empty package of split peas into a colander or bowl. Sort through
well, removing foreign matter and imperfect peas. Rinse well. Soak for
two hours in 2 cups water.

In a large soup pot or Dutch oven, sauté minced garlic in 1 tablespoon
of butter and 1 tablespoon olive oil until garlic golden, but not
brown in color. Add ham bone, water in which peas have been soaked and
2 extra quarts of water, and bay leaves.

Bring to a boil for 1 minute; reduce heat and simmer, covered for 1
hour. Remove cover and simmer an additional hour or until soup is
desired consistency. Add baby carrots during final 20-30 minutes of
cooking (may be roughly chopped, if desired, or leave whole).

If you prefer a pureed soup, process using a hand blender before
adding carrots.

Taste soup one half hour before serving; add additional garlic or
garlic powder and salt and pepper, as desired. Bring a separate pot of
water to a boil and cook spaghetti according to package directions.
Drain.

Stir in milk or cream 10 minutes before serving. If you have any
leftover ham, add at this time. Stir in spaghetti. Remove bay leaves
before serving.

Note: Kids like to use the leftover soup the following day for an
after-school snack by adding hot dogs sliced into 1 inch coins boiled
briefly in a saucepan and stirred in. The soup thickens up overnight
in the refrigerator, so stir in more milk or a pat of butter before
serving.

Most newsreaders allow you to do that. But after KFing the two

Mark Shaw's Annual All Male New Year's Party consisted of an "Asshole
and Pete" themed party. Everyone came dressed up as emo vaginas,
gigantic noses and dirty tampons. He whipped up his traditional
bullshit stew and acid reflux cocktails. Mark's thuth a wicked
therver. Shaw's costume consisted of a "fuck my own cunt" ensemble
where he rolled into a ball and slowly vanished into his own black
hole. Astronomical!!! I gave him a 4/10 on the Barney Fife-o-meter.

Cheers!

No question or problem tipping a delivery person. The person earned it.
But not for just ringing up my total on the register.

As a former pizza delivery driver I would say yes add a tip. They usually
don't get paid that much and tipping helps them make a living....and if
you order frequently it also assures the drivers will make your delivery a
priority.
Post by Dick Keats
You call in an order for a pizza or a sandwich to go. When you pick it
up you flip our your debit card (or cash). Question is should I add a
tip?
If so, I've been cheap for a long time but if I should be tipping I'll
correct my action.
Thanks,
Dick

I don't think that anyone should expect a tip in that situation. Delivery?
ABSOLUTELY tip the driver!

It was always hard to figure out whether people wanted to come pick up an
order or have it delivered. I'd always have the phone people ask if the
order was "pick up" or "delivery" to try and make sure. Sometimes it worked.

What about at Starbucks? I know this is a different question... or is
it? When I drive to the pizza joint to pick up my pizzum (the singular
of pizza!), I don't leave a tip (which seems to be the consensus of
this discussion), and none seems to be expected. But when I place my
order at Starbucks (from the counter or drive-through, rather than
over the phone), there's a tip box on the counter when I pay. The
situation seems to be analogous to me picking up my pizzum, so I've
always been puzzled by the presence of the Starbucks tip box. I should
mention that I've never left a tip at Starbucks, but I've always
gotten good service anyway -- and when I was a regular customer at a
Starbucks near my office and the staff knew me by name, they all knew
that I didn't tip, and I got great service just the same. (In other
words, the Starbucks folks didn't punish me for not tipping.)

So: Do any of you leave tips at Starbucks? And those of you who do but
don't tip when you pick up a pizzum: What's the difference? If the
pizza parlor had a tip box on the counter, would you tip there, too?

I don't drink coffee but the principle is the same.

If I go to the local pizza joint or the smoothie place at the library and
eat there I normally leave a buck or two since they'll either bring it to
where I sit. But they do have tip jars.

Another thing is if I've got a special request like a special combination
and put them through a little effort.

Another place that may open this discussion into a fresh tangent is an
eatery called Fish Bone. You pay at the register and the tip jar is
there. I leave the tip for my food I eat there at the jar.

Why?

I don't exactly trust leaving money on the table there and it's serve
yourself for tea, soda and some fixings. They do have booze but I never
order it as neither of us drink, but I assume the waiter does bring the
beer and whatever else they have.

Why tip for overpriced bad coffee made by someone who got a 2 day course in
how to cover up the taste and is now called a barister.

If I am in an Italian cafe, where my particular beans are kept aside for me,
roast to my directions, the coffee presented at the colour and temperature
that I have made clear I prefer and accompanied by my favorite biscotti, then
I will tip.

Heh. I guess I wouldn't tip either, if my coffee were made by a
lawyer.

I tip at Starbucks simply because they always have my drink ready usually
before I even get into the store. They see me pull into the parking lot and
start before I even shut off the engine....plus my drink cost is so close to
a whole dollar amount that I just drop the change in the box....as for the
box at the pizza counter......I don't think I would simply because the price
I pay os more than enough to pay their slaries...
