MyKidsPlate.com: Setting Standards in Kid-Friendly Dining

Thanks to the overwhelming response we have received from Central
Florida , MyKidsPlate.com is expanding. We are now open for business
to accept nominations of kid-friendly restaurants from all over the
country. Not only do we need nominations from you, we need you to
forward this email to 2 people you know that can help spread the word
about MyKidsPlate.com. We are looking for kid-friendly restaurants,
restaurants that need kid-friendly help, places to go for ‘Grown Ups’
Night Out’ and places to stop when you’re ‘On the Go.’ Go to
www.mykidsplate.com/nominate to submit your recommendation today.

Parents have told us about 30 different attributes they rate a
restaurant on from the minute they drive into the parking lot to the
minute they leave. To take the survey and contribute your opinion, go
to http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=d_2bdUeG77TfLF6f9Vz30mNQ_3d_3d
and let us know what is important to you when you take your kids out
to eat.

Are you a blogger? MyKidsPlate.com can now be found at www.mykidsplateblog.blogspot
where we have started a “Fried Chicken Nuggets” blog. We’d love to
hear your opinion. Want to see what we’ve been up to lately? Check out
http://www.myspace.com/mykidsplate.

Before closing, I just want to thank everyone for your continued
support of MyKidsPlate.com. Together we are revolutionizing the way
restaurants regard the family market segment.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

Seems harsh - though I insist not on kid-friendly restaurants, but
rather on restaurant-friendly kids. Even if it's a "kid-friendly"
restaurant, it shouldn't be Lord of the Flies.

People have no concept of restaurant manners, so why will their kids
unfortunately. Went to Fogo last week, saw...

Ball caps - on, indoors
Flip Flops
Shorts
T-Shirts

And the mother of all, someone using their napkin as a kleenex at their
table.

What... the... fuck...

How much do you have to spend to keep the riff-raff out?

Welcome to Texas.
Those are all OK here.Especially if you're wearing a Cowboy hat. Everywhere
else where cows are raised, hats are removed in civilized dining areas, or
indoors in general: not here. Why not? Just try asking them to remove a
ballcap or cowboy hat in the dining room- you might as well be asking them
to give TX back to Mexico! (Come to think of it... is that so bad?) Would
anybody notice?
Manners are not taught in Texas. Sorry.

I am also in Texas. I have lost count of the times our meals have been
spoiled by brats with "deaf" parents. I hate spending $30-$40 for dinner
where we are expected to put up with unruly brats. When we go into eat, and
if we are taken to a table near kids, we request another seating place. I
really think the yuppy parents are the worst. The more rural the eating
place, the kids are better behaved as the parents tend to be more
down-to-earth. Steak Kountry in McKinney, TX is one such place. Good basic
food and pleasant environment. Unfortunally, we tend to eat more locally
(Plano) at places like Red Lobster and Olive Garden. I will give a shout
out to Steak and Ale...not too many kids and we eat there frequently and
enjoy ourselves.

Maybe, but I can't see much problem with a no-kids policy as long as
it's well-publicized so you're not kicking hungry families out of the
foyer. They will just serve their market and ostracize the rest.

Spot on. We have taken our daughter to restaurants since a very early
age, and she knows very well how to behave - I can't recall ever having
a problem with her that was not immediately corrected without bothering
any other tables.

We rarely went to nicer restaurants when I was a kid - financial
restraint - so when we did, I had the fear of parental wrath instilled
in me should I get out of line. There's no chance they would have let
me - nor would I let my daughter - run around the place like I see too
often. But then, that's my societal pet peeve in general - people
acting as if it's their planet and we just live on it. If their kids
are running around like drunken farm animals, annoying eveyone in the
place, suddenly it's *my* problem for not being tolerant.

We eat out twice a week with our preschool age kids and we never had
any problem with them or other kids for that matter. My kids are not
allowed to talk loud or run around (actually they have to sit in their
seats.) We walked out once when they were not behaving and they learnt
the lesson pretty quickly. Before we go into a restaurant we re-visit
"the rules". The OP's issue may be at restaurants that fit a
demographic different than mine, may be. We frequent restaurants where
an entree costs anywhere from $8 to $15 (Plano and surroundings). The
restaurant staff seat us along with other people with kids. I don't
think I've seen any kid throwing a fit or running around. Wailing
babies, yes occasionally but not brats in their pre-teens.

As a parent I'm just as concerned if my kids misbehave and I'm sure
most normal parents are too.

I carried a tray for several years. If you're being truthful
here (and I have no reason to believe you're not), you're the
exception.

Then there's the tipping. Families with young children are
just one notch up from women in groups as far as cheapness.

See, this is what surprises me. This topic came up a few times before
on this ng. I truly haven't seen brats like some of you are
describing. As I said may be we live in different areas and go to
different restaurants.

I tip 20%. No more, no less. I don't calculate based on the service,
etc. I'm not the type that tips 50%. Sorry.
If 20% is cheap, I don't know what to tell you.

I'm not sure where you're getting the idea that I consider
any specific percentage "cheap."

When I was a tray-carrying wretch, 15% was considered standard,
and 20% generous. I averaged about 12% (and, yes, I kept
records). Famblies and hen parties are what kept that average
down.

This was about 25 years ago, if that matters.

(Not sure why you *wouldn't* adjust for service, myself. I
certainly do. I tip either 20% - or a bit more - or some token
just to let the moron know that I didn't just forget. On rare
occasions I'll tip 15%.)

No, she is NOT the exception, she is the NORM. In the past month, my

No. "Unruly children" are just that - they scream, they cry, they
bang on the tables, they run in front of staff carrying trays, etc.
And this fambly-friendly part of the country is FULL of 'em, and of
pahrunts who won't lift a finger to control them.

People with kids are just blind to this sort of thing.

Not all of us. I see it and recognize it, then use it as an example for
my daughter what not to do. That said, it's not *every* time I go out -
far from it - and I would agree most parents do a good job. The
exception tends to make an impression, though, and when I see it, I do
take note. In fact, being a parent very concerned about not having my
child be an unruly spectacle, I think I personally am more aware of it
than when I was pre-child.

Children behave out as they are allowed to behave at home. If children
are out of control, undisciplined, and unparented hooligans at home,
they will be the same in public, and make everyone at the restaurant
miserable. If they are children who have a grasp on what is, and what
isn't acceptable behavior, such as playing with food, yelling, tossing
food, playing at the table, etc., then you will have well behaved
children who are pleasant to dine with.

These days, children raise children, so it's no surprise you have kids
behaving as they do.
