The wife and I dont often go to buffet places but last night we tried
the Golden Corral in north Richardson at Campbell and Plano Road. When
we entered, we noticed that the same person was taking money and
making change, and then handing out plates for the buffet. We
requested that he not touch our plates, that we would get them
ourselves. He was terrible offended and made a remark under his
breath. I then asked to see the manager. I explained to them both
that handling money and then customers plates was a violation of the
health code. He said that they did not have enought people to have
one person handling the money and another handling the plates. He then
asked the young man if he washed his hands before coming on duty. The
young man said yes, but not between each occurance of handling money
and then plates. The manager then abruptly walked off and went into
the back. We did not see him again while we were there. The food was
not awful, but we won't go back. I hate to imagine what other food
handling errors are occuring there, as there does not seem to be an
culture of sanitary awareness.

It happens in every public place you eat. Go to chili's, waiter gives you
your food, then hands you the bill, then if paid by cash he reaches in his
pocket to give you change. Happens at every public eatery. Bobs Steak and
chop House does it, seen it with my own eyes. So your screwed no matter
where you go. But I don't worry about those things. I look for hair,
nails, roaches, etc....

OCD much? Seriously, if that is the extent of their sanitary
malfeasance, I'd consider myself lucky. Did you touch the door handle to
open the door to the joint? Touch the chairs? The salt and pepper
shakers? The menus? Do you think ANY of those are remotely clean? Are
you wearing gloves? Public restaurants are teeming with the filth of a
hundred hands. You just kinda got to deal with it. Be glad if the food
makes it to your place without the floor ever interceding, and if the
help washed their hands on the way out of the john...

We use a small bottle of hand sanitizer after having touched the door,
the menus, salt shakers etc. I agree that the customer cannot control
all aspects of cleanliness in a restaurant. We can however so anything
we can to bring the things we DO see to the attention of management
and the local health inspection department. To just sit back and do
nothing, that is to "just deal wilth it", is sorta defeatist. If
enough people complain, something WILL be done. As an example, a
friend of mine went to Texas Palomino (sp?) in Richardson. There the
person taking the money was also wraping up the silverware in napkins.
My friend complained to management, to the Richardson health
department, Palomino's head office, and posted to this newsgroup. I
haven't been there, but he says that now the silverware and napkins
are in a self serve area. A small thing for sure but because of his
hour or so labor in doing all this reporting, hunderds, maybe
thousands of people are not exposed to money filth on their
silverware.
The health inspectors are only there once every two or three months so
I believe the public can help by bringing up any systematic violations
that they see. If enough people do this, things do change.

True. Fecal free tableware should be considered a bonus.

So now the silverware is handled by every customer or any customer in
the restaurant before you use it. Thanks a lot!

You guys just don't get it, do you? Sure there is a probability that
another customer "might", "may", "maybe", touch your sivverware, but
I'll take that any day over a 100% certainty that it will have money
filth on it.

I'll also agree that one or more of the A rated restaurants has
probably dropped a 14 oz. ribeye on the floor and served it. But I'll
bet that it does not happen with every 14 oz. steak in every
restaurant. I'll stick with the A and B rated restaurants and play
the odds.

It this makes no difference to you, you will find links below to a few
of the area healh department inspection scores. That way you can
include all those restaurants that have D's and F's and expand your
eating experiences. ( Check your favorites. You might be surprised)

Consistent use of terms like "money filth" probably mean something more
interesting than food hygience scores.

Personally, I prefer that silverware be wrapped in napkins for health use,
but I also am not germophobic enough to carry hand sanitizer with me for
things like doorknobs and salt and pepper shakers, so as a result, I have a
healthy immune system that rejects things instead of letting it be coddled
into a pale and weak imitation of what immune response should be by trying,
though it's impossible to do so, to sanitize everything.

I've worked in restaurants. I even managed one.Health code scores mean
nothing -- I've seen restaurants given one week to clean up their act with a
score of 97, because the particular offense was something that, though only
worth a point or two, was bad enough to make the inspector threaten a shut
down.

Eating out is a social activity, and that means that you share in
everything -- the atmosphere, the shared service, and yes, the shared germs.
And since so much of a restaurant's workings are both out of sight and out
of control of the customer, it's a crap shoot, and what will happen happens.

Do what you want, but since you've shown yourself to germ obsessive, don't
expect those of us who are more Darwinian in our immune system methodologies
to to slap you on the back for your actions to prevent the stupid from
killing themselves off. After all, it's the germophobes who, with all their
antibacterial soaps and a fog of Lysol, are breeding the super-bacteria that
no antibiotic can kill off.

If he saw what goes on in most restaurant kitchens, he'd never
go out to eat again.

Thought experiment: what do you think happens to a 14oz ribeye
after a line cook drops it on the floor?

I really can't believe anyone would freak out about something like
this -- especially since they were eating at a Golden Corral buffet.
If you are THAT germaphobic, the last place you should be eating
anything is at a self serve buffet. I would be far more concerned
with the customers who have all had their hands all over the food, are
breathing over the food, sneezing over the food, the little kids
putting their hands in the food, than a cashier handing me a plate at
the front of the service line. The food in places like are much
filthier than the utensils.
