Discussion:
Better Beer Place: Flying Saucer or Ginger Man

My daughter will be turning 21 soon (she was my brewing assistant when she
was 'young') and she wants us (family- including an 18-yr old designated
driver) to go and sample some good beers.
Question: Which place has a better beer selection and atmosphere in Fort
Worth- Ginger Man or Flying Saucer?
If you know of an alternative, I'd be interested too.

Atmosphere: Gingerman, hands down.

Of course, I haven't been back to the Flying Saucer since
shortly after they opened. The beer was too cold, and it was
full of yuppie scum. So perhaps things have changed since
then.

Come to think of it, I haven't been to the Gingerman for a
couple of years either. So maybe you should just ignore me
in favor of others with more current experience.

Your prompt response and insightful comments far outweigh the date of your
observation. I doubt those conditions have changed. Atmosphere will be
important to me.
Thanks a lot!

In Dallas at least, I prefer Gman to FS for ambience and beer-knowledge
of the waitstaff. FS waitstaff is superior eye-candy but that is
probably not a factor here.

It may be worth dredging up this old thread in dfw.eats:

Rather unpleasant email from the owner of FS. Haven't been back since,
but I suppose he is so rich that he doesn't care.

The important thing for either place is to go in the afternoon if
sampling good beer is what you are after. At night both places can get
raucous depending on the day.

Why not make a day of it?

Start at the Rahr brewery, each Saturday from 1:00 to 3:00 pm they
open the brewery for a tasting. The atmosphere is convivial; no drunks
and everyone is usually upbeat. I sometimes make the drive out there
with my family and they make everyone feel welcome.

Next, take the short drive to the Covey, hands down the best brewpub
in the metroplex. While that is not saying much, this place offers
really solid (and sometimes adventurous) beers paired with top notch
food.

After that head on over to the Gingerman. I hear they have Avery
Maharaja on tap, an excellent IPA that I seem to have missed out on
this year since Central Market and Whole Foods have already sold out.
If not, they are bound to have Flying Dog Double Dog - a beer that
will quickly silence anyone who thinks that DIPAs aren't hoppy enough.

Had a great time at the FS on a Saturday afternoon a couple of weeks ago.
Beers sampled were great and the food was typical FS. Where is the Ginger
Man? I've probably been missing something!

In Dallas the Gingerman is located on Boll just east of McKinney. If
you have never been you have definitely been missing something!
Probably the best beer garden / patio in Dallas. Be sure to go there
on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. They take much better care of their
beers as well.

And the best way to get there is to take DART Rail to the Cityplace
station, and then either walk or take the M-Line streetcar to Boll.

We decided to go to the FS.
When we arrived, it was still somewhat early, so many after-work drop-ins
filled up the seats. I dropped my wife and daughter off at the patio
entrance and tried to find metered parking- no luck. I ended up in the
adjacent lot. When I went to meet my wife and daughter, they were standing
outside and said the place was full. I had already paid $10 for parking, so
I wasn't leaving. Sure enough, everything was full and boisterous. I
remembered online that there was an inside, upstairs room, so I gave it a
shot. I found it, and it was just what we were looking for. It's called
the Half Acre Hall, and it was non-smoking and laid back- quiet enough to
carry on a conversation. The beer selection was limited up there, but you
could bring beers from the main bar. This was great! My daughter had been
studying my Michael Jackson beer guides, so she knew what she wanted to try.
The beers were great, and the 'build your own flight' choice was just what
she was looking for- sampler trays of the beers she wanted to try.
The food was good, artichoke dip, pizza, and brat plates, just don't get
into a hurry up there.
Our evening entertainment was in the form of a couple of bats: several bats
had been flying at the outside window, and a couple made it into the Half
Acre Hall.
That was fun.
It was a fun evening- thanks for the input!
