Do any Dallasites or FortWorthians still read this group?

Or is it all boneheads and trolls from elsewhere? (Just where

I'm THIS CLOSE (forefinger and thumb held 1/16" apart) from
unsubscribing.

Just in case, though: obEats: I understand there's a Gordon

I still read the group on occasion. This was never a high volume
group, but at least until recently, it was at least a friendly one.
Now it seems most posts are people calling each other names, which
is sad.

In an effort to take back the group, I'll go ahead and start
another on topic thread.

Oh, and I've never even heard of Gordon Biersch, sorry.

I'm in Austin. I guess that makes me a bonehead.

ba.food is San Francisco/San Jose area. The home of Gordon Biersch,
BTW. Why don't you ask those boneheads about GB? <heh>.

I posted a message yesterday in this group looking for interesting options
in the Casa View area. This group has always been low volume and had a
moderate amount of people wanking instead of discussing restaurants,
recipes, and other "eats" related stuff. It's best to ignore them and hope
that they'll eventually get a room to deal with their infatuation with each
other out of public view.

I saw that - I was being a little facetious with my subject line,
but I was kind of frustrated.

I would have answered if I had anything for you, but to be honest I
don't even know where Casa View is.

Damn fine cheesecakes, it's where Campisis get their cheesecakes

I think there is a BBQ joint on Garland Rd that pretty good, the name slips
my mind, though.

A lot of Jersey Mikes opening everywhere. Best chain sub I have found,
by a longshot. They even do a decent cheesesteak (though if you are near
a Fred's, you should just get the real deal there).

Roast beef there is especially good - served med-rare and sliced there,
lean and tender.

I recommend Mike's Way with Mayo on their subs, extra vinegar if you get
Roast Beef...

There's one on Spring Valley at the Tollway, and one at 121 and the
Tollway. Springing up like weeds - good, because Subway has GOT to go.

Non-chain place along the tollway outer road just north of Beltline -
next to some home theater place (Starpower maybe?). A little more
expensive maybe, but good stuff. Joe is usually at the counter making
small talk.

It's not just Jersey Mike's - it seems like sandwich chain places are
opening everywhere. Between Potbelly, Lenny's, Firehouse, Jimmy John's,
etc - they're everywhere. In my opinion, by the way, every one of those
is better than Subway. It seems like Subway is re-engineering their
image, though. When they were dominating the market, you could easily
pay 9 bucks for a footlong. Seems like they are trying to reposition as
a value player with the $5 thing - they realized others do it better and
cheaper.

I had the opportunity to go to the Pita Pit in Denton recently, and their
feedback on their site that described them as "Subway for Hippies" seems
accurate. I'd like one of those near my house.

I'm quite glad that Fuzzy's Tacos will open in East Dallas soon, though --
got addicted to them whilst in Denton, but it's too long a drive to get up
there on a regular basis.

I know, but it's a pretty long walk from East Dallas, and since Arlington
eschews mass transit on principle and TxDot doesn't let blind people drive,
it's a bit far for me.

Using actuall walking distance as a guide, the Fuzzy's on Industrial in
Denton is actually much closer than the Arlington location to me, since the
DCTA express busses stop at Central in Denton, which is on the corner of
Industrial. But the one opening on Abrams and Mockingbird will be even
closer, both in time and walking distance.

Yep, I've told people this is the "golden age for sandwiches".

Oh hell yes. I didn't eat Lenny's much - it was my new sub nirvana for
only a couple weeks before I found Jersey Mike's. But their sandwiches
are good, meat cut fresh, tasty...

Firehouse is good, the first bite of their Club is remarkable - the
steaming really brings out the ham flavor, it almost makes you pucker
it's so good. But, that can tend to stale the bread a little and make
your sub a bit... damp. Still, killing Subway.

Jimmy Johns - certainly the fastest sub place on earth. Can't be more
then 90 seconds ever to build one. Good bread, sometimes the roast beef
is hit or miss and I am not sure how I feel about the Roma tomatoes, but
it's still a damn tasty sub.

Quizno's, Baker Brothers, all better than Subway by a mile. The only
thing edible at Subway is their italian sub - hard for them to screw up
hard italian meats.

Subway I think has an enormous problem. It could get to the point where
you only seem them like Dairy Queens - in small markets.

Their biggest problem is the people who work their dont give a shit
about my sandwich. Just slap it on and push it out the door. At Jersey
Mike's they make the sandwich like THEY were the ones who were going to
eat it. Subway? Toss it near the bread and wrap it up. They hire cheap,
and it shows.

Go to a Subway - look at the front of those green shirts. See the crumbs
and crap? That's from the short help reaching across to the back bins
and getting their shirt in the front bins. Awful.

And the meat... roast beef should be red, not green.

I think I have crossed into vendetta territory when it comes to Subway...

I like that - I may steal it. My wife looks at me funny if I'm fending
for myself for dinner and break out the toaster oven and 7,000
ingredients in our kitchen to make a sandwich, but it's the perfect food
if done right.

There's one I usually get there - Engineer I think? Turkey with
mushrooms, swiss and mayo plus veggies. Unusually good flavor. Plus,
Firehouse also has the rack of nuclear-hot sauces up front that pings my
chile-geek meter.

This is a good point, and if you've done any driving through smaller
towns lately in Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri and KAnsas, it's spot on.
Even if they don't have a Dairy Queen anymore, they seem to have a
Subway.

I've had both good and bad in this regard at Subway, and it's really a
consistency problem partially due to the franchise model. If your owner
is an owner of 28 franchises and visits the store once a quarter for an
hour, it might be hard to work up the motivation to be consistently good
in case the boss pops by.

I've only been to Baker Brothers once. The fact that I couldn't
get my sandwich on anything but ciabatta bread annoyed me - I
don't much care for it.

When I worked at TI I had my choice of two roughly equidistant
Subways. The difference in the attitude of the crew at each was
really something.
